Be More Assertive!

From the first day of nursing school, this is what they taught us. Nurses have to be assertive. At first I was like, "what the hell are they talking about? I don't want to be aggressive..." It turns out that that's not even what they meant. I think what they mean is that they want us to stand up for what we think is right; not be demanding, but to have principles.

However, I don't want to generalize, but I think it's an Asian thing when it comes to not being assertive enough. When I was younger, I remember that arguments between my parents and myself never ended well. Whenever I say something that disagreed with them, they would say, "you're disrespectful!" (and sometimes "go back to your room!"). And then we shut up and let it go. We (well "I", I guess) were taught be passive and never argue with someone who we believe is in authority.

I haven't blogging much lately because we need to write reflection journal entries for our clinicals at the hospital. Obviously we're not allowed to post those, but it's not like they're of anything interesting to read anyway.

I think it's also that nurses have to be assertive with patients who don't want to do what they're told :)

The assertiveness is reserved for those why-the-heck-are-you-here ER patients, right? =P

Quick question: when's the last time you bargained for a discount at a store? Most people are afraid of imposing!

I imagine that nurses have to be assertive. It's their job to provide care for patients who don't always know what's best for themselves. As a trained professional, I would assume you have to assert yourself over patients in order to do your job or you'll just be walked over.

I don't think anyone wins many arguments with their parents - Asian or otherwise. In general, I think at least half of all people aren't assertive for fear of being perceived as rude.

Funny, I was just reading a study about how very few nurses challenged a doctor who stated he wanted to give a deadly dose of medicine to a patient; although it was a study and the medicine was a placebo, almost none of the nurses informed the doctor about his potentially fatal miscalculation.

I'm guessing being assertive can be a good thing :P
