Imagine UBC!

Today was the UBC First-Years' orientation! It was pretty fun. However, I ended up being the only girl in my MUG (My Undergraduate Group). Hanson warned me about this. There aren't many girls that go into Computer Science. Since computer science is a branch of the science faculty, there weren't a lot of people in total, maybe around 40-50 people? But out of those 40-50 people, there were only 3-5 girls.... Scary, huh? Well, wish me good luck.

First of all, we started out with a campus tour. The tour was almost the same as the AMS/UBC FirstStep Orientation, but a little more specified towards computer science (duh!). At least we got to go into the computer science department building. There's this giant thing made out of pipes that acts like a logo. Lynn and I couldn't figure out what it was, so she told me to tell her if I find out one day.

Afterwards, we met the dean and learned the science faculty cheer to get ready for the pep rally later on. The dean asked us to be as loud as we can and that we have to cheer so loud that we'll make the engineers bleed from their ears. Anyway, I thought that our cheer sucked. It goes:

We're skilled!
We're smart!
We're Science UBC!

Anyway, the pep rally was very fun. I don't think I've ever yelled so loud in my entire life. But no matter how loud I yelled, I couldn't hear myself because there were always people louder. I thought that the speeches that the "important people" had to make was going to be really boring, but it wasn't. Most of their speeches were very inspirational, and it gave us a good push to start our lives at UBC. I'm beginning to like this school very much. Tomorrow is our first "real" classes. I need to go to sleep early so I have enough energy to stay awake during lectures tomorrow.

Wow, Carleton rocks so hard in the cheer dep't compared to UBC. Sample cheer (I love this cheer, embarassingly): There's a hole in the city And its name is Ottawa U And if you're dull and boring Then it's the place for you And if you're into concrete, and ugly buildings too Then welcome to Ottawa U (2, 3, 4) Fuuuuuuuuuck you, Ottawa U Fuuuuuuuuuck you, Ottawa U En francais c'est fuckez-vous, Ottawa U So fuck you Ottawa U. Yeah, I love it. *shame* I'm so happy you like your school!!!!!

My MUG leader was more or less an idiot. Seriously, I doubt he even knew half the stuff he 'showed' us on the tour and he had to keep refering to his guide book for reference. Anyways, your cheer should be "So simple. So stupid. So Science UBC." J/K :p all the faculties EXCEPT Nursing and Engineering, both of which are in Applied Science Faculty, change their cheers a lot. Last year, Commerce got in trouble because they changed their cheer that put down every other faculty. So this year, theirs sucks. I think I'll survive my first semester of classes since it's not that many but second semester.... o dear... I have lots of stuff crammed into it. YIKES!!!!
